GOOD EARTH GREEN HYDROGEN AND AMMONIA PROJECT
ADVANCING LOW-CARBON SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE
IN NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA.

THE GEGHA PROJECT

The Good Earth Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Project (GEGHA) involves the construction and operation of a renewable ammonia and green hydrogen production facility near Moree, in northern New South Wales, Australia.

Our goal is to help farmers reduce the emissions associated with their production, and enable them to meet consumer demand for low-carbon and sustainable produce in increasingly carbon-conscious domestic and export markets.

We aim to provide a more resilient, locally produced and lower emissions supply of key inputs to farm production and transport to market - fertiliser and fuel. ​

The GEGHA project is a joint venture partnership between Hiringa Energy and Sundown Pastoral. It provides Sundown and other customers in the Moree Plains region with green ammonia to reduce their emissions related to fertiliser use, and hydrogen as a replacement to diesel and LPG use, both on-farm and on-road.

LOCATION

The GEGHA project will see an integrated solar energy to hydrogen and ammonia operation developed on Sundown's Keytah agricultural property.​

Located on cleared private land just off the Gwydir Highway, 33km south west of Moree in northern New South Wales, GEGHA will be constructed immediately adjacent to the existing Stage 1 Wathagar Solar Farm and the Wathagar Cotton Gin.

PLANNING TIMELINE
Q3 2023 - Specialist studies and data gathering
Q4 2023 - Finalisation of specialist studies; correlation of data and preparation of draft EIS for review
Q1 2024 - Lodgement of EIS to the Department of Planning and Environment; EIS on display for public comment
Q2 2024 - Evaluation of submissions and finalisations of planning consent

SUPPORTING LOW CARBON AGRICULTURE

Production of green fertiliser (ammonia) and fuel (hydrogen) provides low-carbon solutions for primary producers and transportation businesses to transition to renewable feedstocks. The GEGHA Project demonstrates how Australia can:

Decouple agriculture from fossil fuel driven fertiliser production.

Provide a credible pathway for heavy goods vehicle operators (public and private) to transition to low emission transport using hydrogen to replace diesel.

Provide a locally produced alternative to diesel for the agricultural sector which allows for a reduction in on-farm emissions.

SOCIAL, SUSTAINABILITY AND ECONOMIC VALUE

The project will contribute to the sustainability of primary production and business in the region, providing a sound platform for the low-carbon transition, and a foundation for stability and opportunity in the broader regional economy.​

During construction, the GEGHA project will provide significant direct and indirect employment in the Moree region targeting the use of local staff and contractors where possible.

When in operations, the plant provides high skilled, long term employment for an operations and maintenance team ​

The GEGHA Project will deliver direct abatement of over 17,000t CO2 equivalent per annum.​

Regional expansion projects will grow this to abatement of 164,000t CO2 equivalent per annum, and stimulate the broader low-carbon hydrogen economy in the regions by making available hydrogen for diesel and LPG substitution in regional on- and off-farm applications.​

THE GEGHA PROJECT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE DECARBONISATION OF ONE OF THE
MOST PRODUCTIVE AGRICULTURAL ECONOMIES IN AUSTRALIA.

​WHAT DOES THE PROJECT INVOLVE?

DISCOVER WHAT IS INVOLVED IN THE GOOD EARTH GREEN HYDROGEN TO AMMONIA PROJECT AND HOW THIS WILL BE DELIVERED IN TWO STAGES.

THE PROJECT'S KEY COMPONENTS INCLUDE:

  • 27MW of solar generation capacity

  • Battery storage of generation to smooth generation supply profile

  • A world scale hydrogen electrolysis plant (12MW), producing green hydrogen from the renewable electricity and water

  • A 10 tonne per day ammonia plant, to convert some of the green hydrogen into green ammonia.

  • Hydrogen storage and ammonia storage capacity to manage variable renewable energy supply and seasonal ammonia demand

  • Offtake of ammonia for direct use as fertiliser locally; and offtake of green hydrogen to supply on-road heavy transport and on-farm energy use in NSW regions.

COMMUNITY

Hiringa Sundown Project Trust is committed to undertaking best practice engagement during the planning, construction and operation of the GEGHA project. This will ensure all stakeholders and the local community have meaningful opportunities to engage with the project team and contribute to the planning process and operation of the facility.

Our project team commit to the following consultation principles:

  • Act with Purpose: Ensure that stakeholders are consulted and informed about the project as it relates to them. Where concerns are raised or improvements are suggested, they will be fully considered in the design, planning and operation of GEGHA.

  • Act with Integrity: Ensure that consultation and engagement is conducted in a manner that promotes openness and transparency, fostering mutual respect and trust.

  • Act with Intent: Ensure that consultation enables thorough communication between HSPT and all project stakeholders through the timely engagement and distribution of project information that is clear, accurate and relevant. 

ENVIRONMENT & PLANNING

Sustainability is at the heart of the GEGHA project’s design. Power required for the production of hydrogen and ammonia will be sourced primarily from the adjacent Wathagar solar farm whilst water will be sourced from the rainwater runoff from the Wathagar cotton gin. This will enable a much more environmentally holistic production of cotton and cereals in the region.

The project’s planning will be divided into two separate streams: 

Hydrogen and Ammonia Production and Storage

The Hydrogen and Ammonia production and storage portion of the project satisfies the criteria of State Significant Development under Division 4.7 of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act and Section 2.6(1) of the Planning Systems State Environmental Planning Policy.

The proposed storage of ammonia on site meets the threshold under the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2017 that would require the site to be designated a Major Hazard Facility. This adds a layer of additional design, risk assessment and rigour that will be undertaken during the detailed design and planning phase to ensure safe construction and operation of the facility.

Wathagar Solar Farm

The Wathagar Solar Farm will be permitted under a separate Development Application relating directly to solar power generation, grid connection and battery storage.
