Corvus Energy awarded funding for the integration of ammonia cracker technology with Pelican Fuel Cell system.

Nuvera Fuel Cells, LLC, a provider of fuel cell power solutions, is participating in the EU-funded APOLO project. APOLO (“Advanced POwer conversion technoLogies based on Onboard ammonia cracking through novel membrane reactors”) is dedicated to leveraging fuel cells and other power conversion technologies to decarbonize maritime transportation. Nuvera will provide an EN-125 engine to operate on hydrogen derived from ammonia, which is emerging as a key zero-carbon fuel in the maritime sector that can be produced renewably.

Nuvera’s 125 kW fuel cell engine incorporates the company’s ninth-generation stack architecture with improved power density. This high-efficiency power system is an easily integrated modular product that can be combined in multiples for double, triple, or even higher power.

Shipping is responsible for three percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions each year.

Launched at the beginning of 2024, the twelve-member APOLO consortium , coordinated by Tecnalia, aims to tackle the challenges of power conversion from ammonia and develop an efficient and flexible ammonia cracking technology. This technology will be coupled with fuel cells to enable the decarbonization of maritime applications. The technologies developed for the project will be capable of serving the estimated 30,000 ships with 1 to 10 MW propulsion in operation.

The APOLO project is focused on a 125 kW energy conversion system, using an ammonia cracker coupled to a PEM fuel cell system, to achieve an overall system efficiency of 51% to 54%. The ammonia cracker will be customised to operate at different pressure conditions and efficiency levels to assess the flexibility of the cracking system for all types of PEM fuel cells.

APOLO is also working with a 125 kW partial ammonia cracker coupled to a 4-stroke engine, which has an overall system efficiency of more than 45%. A Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system will also be developed to eliminate NOx emissions from the exhaust of the new engine.

The 4-year project received more than €7.5 million through the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) under the powers delegated by the European Commission.

Nuvera is a subsidiary of Hyster-Yale Group, Inc., which designs, engineers, manufactures, sells, and services a line of lift trucks and aftermarket parts marketed globally primarily under the Hyster and Yale brand names. Hyster-Yale Group is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hyster-Yale Materials Handling. Hyster-Yale Materials Handling and its subsidiaries, headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, employ approximately 8,300 people worldwide.
